How age is calculated
Age calculation follows the Gregorian calendar system used by 193 of 195 countries worldwide. The method counts the number of complete years, months, and days elapsed between a date of birth and a reference date (typically today). This is the same method used by government agencies globally — the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) uses this system for Aadhaar age verification, and the Election Commission of India uses it to determine voter eligibility at age 18.
As of April 19, 2026, someone born on January 1, 1990 is exactly 36 years, 3 months, and 18 days old. That's approximately 13,258 days, 318,192 hours, or 19,091,520 minutes. The next birthday is in 8 months and 12 days.
Why age calculation matters
Accurate age calculation is required for numerous legal and administrative purposes in India and worldwide. According to Indian law, different age thresholds trigger different rights and obligations: voting at 18 (Representation of People Act, 1950), driving at 18 (Motor Vehicles Act, 1988), marriage at 21 for men and 18 for women (Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006), and senior citizen benefits at 60 (Income Tax Act, Section 80TTB and Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme).
For government services, age is verified through documents like Aadhaar (1.4 billion cards issued), birth certificates, and school leaving certificates. The Supreme Court of India has ruled that the date of birth recorded in the school register is the primary evidence of age for government employment purposes.
